What an incredible experience it was to be part of this year’s Ages of Pages Book Fair — an event that truly celebrated the vibrancy and diversity of the writing community across New Zealand and Australia.
With around 100 authors gathered together at the Claudelands Event Centre (Hamilton), the energy in the room was humming all day. While the majority of attendees were fiction authors, I was delighted to find myself set up beside Debbs Murray, the author of One Soul, One Survivor, whom we shared a lovely camaraderie throughout the day.
One of the most touching aspects of the event was meeting so many people who already knew The Missing Piece — readers who made a special effort to stop by the stall simply to say hello, share a moment, and connect over our shared experiences. It was an honour to hear how the book has resonated with so many of you.
A particular highlight was meeting several newly diagnosed women, who had heard I would be attending and made the journey specifically. It was wonderful to see their excitement, their courage, and their willingness to step into their ADHD journey with curiosity and strength.
Equally heartwarming were the conversations with undiagnosed women — and the sisters, aunts, parents, and grandparents of loved ones navigating ADHD. Many came seeking greater understanding, eager to support their families and themselves with compassion. The stories shared were deeply familiar.
Talking face-to-face with so many of you, hearing your journeys and sharing in those deeply human moments, reminded me again why open conversation around ADHD is so important. Every story, every question, every nod of understanding added to a sense of community.
A huge thank you to everyone who visited the stall, shared your story, bought a book, or simply stopped by for a chat. Your support, openness, and willingness to connect made this event truly special.
Until next time —
Julie
