Voice-work is another passion that has stuck with me for decades. I'm delighted to have been signed (Jun 2025) with OUTSPOKEN by ODD, my new agent, after a few years being distracted by life and other creative pursuits.
I’ve been a voice artist since my early twenties, thanks to a lucky twist of fate. While working in film production in Wellington, I was literally on my way to lunch when someone tapped me on the shoulder. The ‘professional voice’ hadn’t turned up for a 30-second radio ad, and they needed someone quickly. I stepped in, felt instantly at home behind the microphone, loved the creative process, and to my surprise, did rather well. Not long after moving to Auckland, I signed with a voice agent.
From 1990 through to 2010, I voiced too many projects and clients to name (and to be honest, I’ve forgotten most of them). Some of the ones I do remember include Yellow Pages, Air New Zealand, Regal Salmon, FAI Finance, Cairns Fudge, Nestlé, The Warehouse, and Water Safety. My voice turned up everywhere from telephone prompts and inflight promotions, to documentaries, corporate presentations, and a wide variety of radio and television ads. I also spent several years as a presenter on Food TV and the Living Channel for Sky TV.
While it may 'seem' like an easy job, it really takes experience to sync voice to video (if voicing to a TVC), speed up and slow down to fit the time constraints, take direction well, all while keeping a good sense of humour. I love the challenge!
Of all the work I’ve done, I’ve always loved the scripts I could really sink my teeth into. The ones that gave me room to play. Hidden behind the walls of the audio booth, I could contort my face into all sorts of shapes to find the right tone, pace, and energy. If you lived in New Zealand during those years, chances are you’ve heard me—whether you realised it or not.
